Minutes January 12, 1997The informal meeting began at 7:00 P.M. in the lounge of Steak and Ale Restaurant. After a period of socializing and refreshments, the formal meeting was called to order with a collect for the first Sunday of Epiphany from the 1789 Book of Common Prayer. The By-Laws of the Executive Committee presented for consideration of the founding members at the December meeting were unanimously adopted after lengthy discussion. Nominations from the floor and Election of the members of the Executive Committee will be held at the February meeting. The final charge to the steering committee was to determine the cost of membership to the society. This final duty was discharged with the decision that there would be no cost beyond a ten dollar (US) subscription rate for those who want to receive the Society newsletter. This method avoids the impression that only paying members are welcome to attend the meetings. We want to make it very clear that anyone with an interest in C.S. Lewis is welcome at the meetings. It also allows participation in the Society by those who are geographically too far away to attend the meetings. And finally, it avoids the problem of families with more than one person in the Society from paying multiple dues unless more than one copy of the newsletter is desired. Rich Cook brought up the possibility of having C.S. Lewis's step-son, Douglas Gresham as a guest speaker in April or May. It was decided to postpone a decision until the February meeting. Rich is to check on details; expenses, topic, etc. and will report to us at that time. Larry Lacy, professor of philosophy at Rhodes College, moderated a discussion of Till We Have Faces. Larry began the discussion with the information that this book is a restatement of the Greek myth of Psyche and Cupid, and suggested that at a basic level it is a story dealing with life-shaping decisions. From there the discussion ranged freely over a variety of perspectives, from instances of Joy experienced by various characters to specific examples in the story of the way natural love can become unlove if not made subject to divine love The meeting adjourned with the announcement that our February meeting will be held at Steak and Ale Restaurant, 6201 Poplar Avenue on Sunday, February 9 at 7:00 P.M. for 30 minutes of fellowship and visiting prior to beginning the formal meeting at 7:30. For the program, Dennis Beets will present a brief overview of C.S. Lewis's life. Present were: Cydney Beets, Rich Cook, Margie Cook, Ann Freeman, Jerre Freeman, Larry Lacy, Ann Marty, , Keith Parker, and Dennis Beets
