Memphis C. S. Lewis Society Minutes of February 9, 1997 meeting Steak and Ale Restaurant - East Memphis Present: Barry Anderson, Cydney Beets, Dennis Beets, Rich Cook, Margie Cook, Janet Cupo, Bob Oliver, Judith Oliver, Dennis Beets. Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer. Rich Cook reported that the Society Home Page is up and running on the internet at http://cslewis.home.ml.org. The group discussed the possibility of having Douglas Gresham visit Memphis for a week of lectures. It was decided that expense of such an endeavor is prohibitive at this time. The group elected the following Executive Committee: Historian - Barry Anderson; Newsletter Editor - Dennis Beets; members at large - Rich Cook, Ann Marty, and Judith Oliver. This election marks the end of conducting business at regular society meetings. This responsibility now falls to the Executive Committee, freeing the regularly scheduled meetings for discussion of Lewis. The program was a presentation by Dennis Beets on Lewis' life from his childhood through his stay with William T. Kirkpatrick. The discussion that followed was brief but lively, with Barry Anderson bringing up one significant oversight in the presentation: Lewis's love in his use for Beatrix Potter's "Squirrel Nutkin," and the 'Idea of Autumn' found there which Lewis lists as an experience of Joy. The next meeting will be on March 9. The program will be readings and discussions from the members' favorite Lewis writings. Submitted by Dennis Beets |
